Phi-Brain- Puzzle of God was made by Sunrise (which surprises me) who has also done Gintama and Tiger& Bunny. It was later Licensed and Dubbed by Sentai Filmworks which has also dubbed To Love-Ru and Clannad.
Kaito Daimon would be a completely average high school student except for one thing: he’s a master at solving puzzles. Kaito is so brilliant, in fact, that when he’s asked to take some ‘special’ tests of his unique ability, he immediately suspects that the test itself is a test. Kaito suddenly finds himself caught up in a lethal Philosopher’s Puzzle made by the sinister group POG, a murderous maze of trap upon trap, where failing to solve the secret correctly will result in death! The more Kaito discovers about the POG the more he finds out about himself and his past.
Phi-Brian has 3 seasons to date with the 3rd starting soon, that’s why I’m only reviewing the first season since it’s incomplete. So with that said Phi-Brain is a type of anime that I think we need more of,mystery anime. You can pretty much break the first season’s story down to 3 plot points. The first is Kaito and how he meets and reacts to his soon to be close friends and his childhood friend Honoka. The second is Kaito solving the POG’s puzzle challenges and the third is figuring out Kaito’s pass and his connection to the main enemy of the season Rook Banjo Crossfield. Which just go to say you have to be a main villain to have a middle name like Banjo. So even though I can spell out the story so easily in a anime that is suppose to make you think, I can still stay that I enjoyed the story.
The puzzles were clever and the some of the twists I didn’t seem coming and was happy about it. I helps when You have characters that work off each very well and I do mean characters and not actors. Its like the creators made these characters tropes on purpose so they can mix and match the tropes is as many situations as they want. Now I said tropes not bland, The main cast and some of the supporting are well done. They are just done in ways we have seen over and over before. Tropes like the smart-ass with a promise or goal he cant stop going for, a know it all genius who’s younger then everyone else and the nosy girl who of course loves the main characters but is to dense to admit it. Again done well just not original. The animations is solid, not much to gock at but at the same time nothing that makes you sick looking at it or wonder why the creators paid for this. I also have to mention the puzzle time music which so amazing and just pumps you up like watching a james bond movie or mission impossible.
With all that said I give Phi-Brain: Puzzle of God a 7/10 and a check it out score. It’s characters arn’t new and the animation is just o.k. but the puzzles are fun and by the end you will feel for Kaito and maybe Rook. If you want to watch another mystery anime like this try Spiral or Case Closed.
