R.O.D the OVA or Read or Die the OVA was produced by Aniplex but animated by Studio DEEN which has also done Ah My Buddah and Gravitaion. Lated licensed by Manga Entertainment and Aniplex of America which both hold the rights to this anime. Dubbed by Gaijin Productions which has also dubbed Dead Leaves and The End of Evangelion (movie).
Yomiko Readman is a lovable, near-sighted bibliomaniac working as a substitute teacher at a Japanese high school. Her real identity, however, is that of a secret agent for the British Library Special Operations Division. Her codename: “The Paper.” The moniker denotes her supernatural ability to freely manipulate paper into any object she can imagine, including tools and weapons in her fight against the powerful and self-serving IJIN (Great Historical Figure) Army! some of the historic figures Yomiko fight is Genjo Sanzo and Ludwig van Beethoven, this is going to be fun.
Read or Die the OVA is filled with potential that goes nowhere until really late into the anime series. Which kind of makes this skip able for the story at least, since what happens here is only half of what makes up the series and isn’t even the best part. But I should probably stop talking about the series since this is a review of the OVA,which for the most part is a lot of fun. If you only look at this as a stand alone project and not a prequel it’s very fun. The music and opening reminds you of a James Bond movie or a Perfect Dark video game. Just so calm and cool. The story it self is about super powered women with the help of a secret organization taking on a mad scientist with super power clones of famous people. Can you spell awesome! Because this OVA defiantly can. Sadly again I have to bring up the series because the creators were planning it when they made the OVA, the OVA doesn’t really answer a lot of the questions given too us. All we get is the “the bad guy” gets stopped that’s all. They dont explain the clones, the powers or the organization at all. We dont get to know any of that until at least halfway through the series. There isn’t a lot of main characters in this 3 episode OVA (I know shocker) but the one’s they do have are really enjoyable. You have Yomiko “The Paper” who will make you pick up a book just from watching how much she loves books. Who is also able to control paper which sounds stupid but they use it really well and in creative ways. You also have the super spy Nancy Makuhari who has no problem killing with her skills or her power to walk through solid objects. she also has really nice developing arc in this which is surprising since it’s only 3 episodes but it’s done well and making sense. You also have the villain which is one noted and not worth talking about and Joker who is Yomiko’s boss and isn’t important till the series, so again not worth talking about. Last thing I got to say is the animation is really nice and fluent expectational for something made in 2001 and the fights are amazing and worth seeing.
With all that I give R.O.D the OVA a score of 8/10 and a rating to watch it. It’s only 3 episodes and even though it doesn’t answer all the questions it gives it’s still worth watching for the characters, music and fights which are great. If you want to check out another anime about cool secret agents check out Golgo 13 or Darker Than Black.
